Holiday Home Decorations: Do They Help or Hurt a Christmas Sale?

It is not easy to sell a property in Singapore. On average, it takes about 3 months to sell a HDB flat, 6 months to sell a private condominium and more than a year to sell a landed property. So, if you are thinking of putting your house on the market during the holiday seasons it may be more difficult, as many would be in a holiday mood and not serious about house hunting. Would holiday home decorations help or hurt if you need to market it during the Christmas period?

Keep it classy

For a start, too much Christmassy decorations can be distracting to potential buyers and make the whole house look cluttered and messy. If they are serious buyers, they want to visualise how their dream home would look with their own furniture and décor. You want them to imagine putting their furniture in each room and making it their dream home. As the old saying goes, one man’s meat is another man’s poison.

Of course, you can still have some holiday décor, after all, it is Christmas, and you are welcoming family and friends over. Remember, elegant decorations can provide a classy look and feel that will attract buyers.

Provide a warm, cosy atmosphere

Putting up a small Christmas tree and a few ornaments will look good and bring up the holiday spirit. Your home will have a warm, cosy atmosphere and this will make the buyers feel like they’ll want to live here. Having too many decorations will just create clutter and make the house feel smaller. Feature small displays and items that highlight the versatility of the home.

If your house is tastefully decorated for the holidays, potential buyers will see the home in a different light and may just spread the word, and even if they may not be interested in buying, they may tell a friend who could be looking for a new home. Having some decorations may give out a real home ambience that could swing the buyer’s decision if he is undecided. By having minimal decorations, you’ll make it easier for potential buyers to envision the space as their own and that will increase the chances of them committing.

Remember, the holiday season is usually the low period in real estate. There are not as many properties for sale as compared to the peak months of March to July. Therefore, buyers are more serious during this period and if you have a property that’s nicely decorated in a tasteful manner, chances are that you may be able to close the deal at the right price.
